Reading and Learning. Preparing for my dissertation and seeing if this process works for me. My current process is no process at all. It does come together, but with some stress. Looking forward to learning from this research process.

Well, I was just getting started and my ReMarkable pad malfunctioned. Technology!! I feel as though you might be giggling at this knowledge as I am forced to pick up a pen and notebook this week. Argh.

Lol, not giggling. I do think it’s kind of funny though, in the sense that technology has no way of knowing when it interrupts us and undercuts itself. I’ve long believe that the convenience it always advertises is only there until it doesn’t work at which point it’s colossally more ineffficient then the analog world. Doesn’t mean it has no value, just a lot less than its maker pretends.

You wrote:

" So far as I can tell, there are five or six reasons people (including you and me) do so, but I’ll reduce them to three categories so we can get started."

When you have time, would you list the other reasons you think we take notes?

REMARKABLE TABLET OK - I'm chaotic and have always been totally useless at organizing my research. I have dozens of notebooks, at any one time - can never find anything. And I'm an academic with ADHD and dozens of cycling interests....often with no connection to each other. falconry, theology, sheep ...And I also invested in a reMARKABLE tablet. It's analogue but also digital - and I know it's against the spirit of this marvellous system however I have spent the morning seeing if I can work out how I can do this on the tablet.

The first problem is that if you add pages, the page numbers change - destroying the indexing. But you can set up a fixed page template - like a 150 page notebook; and you can also 'tag' pages. I will post some pics of the templates I have created on my Note

I’m in. Thanks for the notebook tip. My son just started using a Leuchtturn and he likes it. I may just go old school with three ring binders.

Is there a particular brand of notebook you recommend?

So much depends on your own proclivities. I’ll grab the nearest one available if it’s what I have to do. But if I’m feeling like the world is fruitful and I can get someone to give it to me for my birthday or Christmas, I like Leuchtturm.

Please—You make it sound so complicated. Thanks to other notetaking advice, I began making an index with the last four pages of my existing journal. You write down the date and next to that something about your entry for that day. Start at the bottom of page and work up. And my entire journal is just a small size A5 spiral bound book from Staples. It is lightly lined on recycled sugar paper (not white). Inexpensive so I do not hesitate to actually use it every day. Using it is the most important thing.

Fantastic. If that meets your needs, you should be content with it!
